Who should use this page
This guide is for first-time hardware wallet users, people migrating funds to self-custody, and anyone who wants step-by-step instructions to initialize Ledger hardware securely. It focuses on official flows: installing Ledger Live, firmware verification, creating and protecting your recovery phrase, PIN & optional passphrase, and testing transactions.
Before you start — what you need
- Your Ledger device and original cable.
- A computer or mobile device with an up-to-date browser, or Ledger Live desktop/mobile app.
- Secure offline space to record your recovery phrase (paper or durable metal backup; not a camera or cloud).
- Optional: a second device for practicing recovery or testing transactions.
Step 1 — Verify the package and device
Inspect the box and tamper-evident seals. Ledger ships devices without firmware installed — this is normal and expected. If packaging appears tampered with, contact Ledger support and do not initialize the device.
Safety tip: Only use official ledger.com/start links and downloads. Avoid third-party installers or links from emails and social media.
Step 2 — Download & install Ledger Live
Ledger Live is Ledger’s official companion app for initializing devices, installing firmware, adding accounts, and managing assets. Download the desktop or mobile app from ledger.com/start, then open Ledger Live and choose Get started.
Step 3 — Connect device & install firmware
- Connect your Ledger device using the supplied cable. Follow on-screen instructions in Ledger Live.
- If firmware is required, Ledger Live will prompt you to install or update it — follow the prompts and do not disconnect until complete.
- Only install firmware through Ledger Live to ensure authenticity and integrity.
Step 4 — Create a new wallet or restore an existing one
Choose Set up as new device to generate a fresh secret recovery phrase, or Restore device if you already have a recovery phrase from another wallet. Follow the device prompts and confirm each step on the device display.
Step 5 — Record your recovery phrase securely
The device will display a 24-word (or device-appropriate) recovery phrase — write these words in order on the provided recovery sheet. Store the sheet offline and in a secure location. Never photograph or save the phrase digitally.
- Consider a metal backup plate for long-term durability.
- Distribute copies only according to your personal risk/recovery plan (avoid single points of failure).
Step 6 — Set PIN and optional passphrase
Protect physical access with a PIN. Optionally enable a passphrase to create a hidden wallet. A passphrase adds defense-in-depth but if it’s lost, access to funds in that hidden wallet is lost — record it securely if you use one.
Step 7 — Test with a small transaction
Before transferring large balances, send a small amount to and from your Ledger account and confirm addresses on the device screen. Always verify the address displayed on the Ledger device before approving.
Troubleshooting & common scenarios
Device not recognized
Try a different USB cable/port, ensure Ledger Live and your OS/browser are up to date, or try the mobile app. If problems persist, consult Ledger Support.
Forgot PIN or lost device
If you forget your PIN you must reset the device and restore using your recovery phrase. If you lose the recovery phrase and device, funds cannot be restored — keep backups secure.
Security checklist
- Download Ledger Live only from ledger.com/start.
- Verify firmware updates via Ledger Live (do not use unofficial sources).
- Never share your recovery phrase or enter it into any website or email.
- Confirm addresses on the physical device before approving transactions.
Advanced topics (optional)
Ledger supports advanced workflows like multiple accounts, staking, third-party app integrations, and enterprise provisioning. For enterprise use or multisig, follow documented best practices and test recovery procedures on spare hardware before storing significant funds.
